The St. Petersburg international airport has improved greatly since I was here in ’93. However, the domestic airport was stuck in a timewarp, and kinda scared us all. When we got to Moscow, all was well though, as their airport is decidedly modern. The city itself is absolutely and indescribably huge and sprawling. While St. Petersburg is very old European, with no tall buildings, and a consistently old world design, Moscow is modern, smoggy, crowded, trafficy, dirty, and full of varying architecture. The old communist buildings look like Gotham city, and the Orthodox churches throughout are inspiring. The show was packed, the crowd was fantastic (they love music), and the trip to Red Square afterward was unforgettable. Tomorrow: Germany.
