King Compromise
“You can only compromise your integrity for so long before it starts to look like somebody else’s.”
That’s the first thing I wrote down when I thought about starting a blog. The Old Testament is filled with stories of dudes who thought God didn’t have an eye on their integrity, and they suffered all manner of terrible fates for it.
I heard recently someone say how the term ‘Artist’ is thrown around way too loosely these days, when referring to people in music. Not a lot of art going on. Just a lot of entertainment. Same thing with ‘Church,’ and ‘Worship.’ Are very many of the things we label as such truly representative of these names?
I’ve compromised in all of these areas…for years. And I have plenty of wretchedness to show for it. All my own doing, for I have been the King of Compromise.
Time for this king to be dethroned. Somebody get me a guillotine.
great post. i met you a few times when i played in the band ember (we were working with eric c. and northern for a while.). you are actually one of my favourite guitarists of all time…sorry to dump that on you and exalt you to the higher annuls of guitargoddom. i used to go see the prayer chain almost every time you played in southern california…i would drive for hours to see you guys play. i was one of those kids who wasn’t allowed to listen to “secular” music…although i always had my secret stash of cure, smiths, fugazi and husker du tapes. your music got me through a rough time…along with the 77’s, the choir, lsu, adam again etc…i actually had great music that my parents wouldn’t give me grief for. i started playing guitar in 8th grade (1989) and taught myself how to play “shawl” after wearing out 3 cassette tapes of it. i have loved your work with the violets and with cush. incredible. inspiring. thanks for making the music you make.
i stumbled across your blog and thought i would drop you a note. i still talk to eric c. sometimes and although i don’t tour anymore i still write, record and play my own stuff. (i used to sing and play guitar in a band called the beautiful mistake from orange county)
anyways…i have turned this into me, a 31 yr old man, becoming a overzealous fanboy post. i hope all is well. i appreciated your post “king compromise”. God bless.
